Morrison Rail Services, the specialist rail division of Morrison Utility Services, has been appointed by Network Rail to manage the renewal of 4Nº rectifier transformers and rectifier units and associated equipment at the Merstham, Preston Park, Redhill and Salfords substations.

The Sussex transformer renewals project will involve complex staging designs to ensure railway service remains unaffected throughout the renewal works. The project is valued at £1.2m and is expected to run to July 2014. The scope of works includes:

  • Principal Contractor and Designer under CDM regulations
  • Site survey including detailed transport surveys
  • Protection and possession planning
  • Design, supply, install and commissioning works required to meet the SCADA RTU
  • Decommission and removal of existing equipment
  • Civil and structural works
  • Modifications to existing structures
  • Installation of equipment, cables and materials
  • Earthing and bonding
  • Testing and commissioning of new equipment and cables
  • Coordination of site access agreements, traffic management and community relations

We are delighted to have been awarded this project by Network Rail. This scheme involves the integration of new equipment into existing substations, with complex staging designs, including the creation of detailed inspection and test plans (ITPs),  deployed to ensure rail service across the Sussex region remains entirely unaffected.  Value engineering analysis and delivery, twinned with the deployment of modern construction methods, have served to avoid daily HV switch outs, whilst ensuring that the performance and reliability of the Sussex electrification system is maintained.
