Danny Nolan, team leader at Morrison Utility Services (MUS), the UK’s largest dedicated utility service provider and part of M Group Services, has been hailed a hero after tackling a blaze in the engine of a school bus last week.
Nolan is part of the MUS team working on the Welsh Waste Water contract delivering repair and maintenance works to waste water networks in North Wales. He was on his way to his first job of the day in Bodelwyddan when he noticed the smoke billowing from the back of the coach after the driver pulled it into a lay-by opposite the school.
The driver of the Oare's coach had attempted to put out the blaze using on-board extinguishers but this proved ineffective. Nolan’s quick-thinking saved vital minutes as he used a high pressure hose kept in his van (usually used to clear underground drains) to put out the fire.
It took half a tank, approximately 500 litres, to douse the fire. By the time the emergency fire services arrived at 9:30am, Nolan had completely extinguished the fire.
Reluctant to call himself a hero, Nolan commented: “When I came round I could see thick, black smoke; when I got closer it was getting thicker and I could see flames inside behind the engine. I was in the right place at the right time. I feel I've done my good deed for the day."
It is not the first time Danny has come to the rescue: a few years ago, he extinguished another engine fire on the A55.
MUS Executive Director, John Edwards, commented: “We’re very proud of Danny and the bravery he showed when responding to this incident. Not only has he shown that he is dedicated to the team he works with at MUS, but also to the community around him.”
